How Does The moon Cycle impact Our Health?

Let’s talk about it.

My eyes were opened to the connection of health and the moon when I spent 8 months in North Africa and learned about certain healing methods like cupping which are only done during a full moon because of the influence it has on the bodies detox systems.

Then I began reflecting on truth I saw around me, like how when I was a nurse, the hospital was super hectic during a full moon. As a curious soul by nature, I began diving deeper.

I began getting curious about my own body, like why I often get insomnia before a full moon. Turns out this is due to fluctuating hormones. Studies show insomnia can worsen around a full moon due to the decreasing melatonin that occurs. (PMID: 23891110).

Our body is interconnected, so when melatonin naturally decreases, your serotonin levels increase. If you are someone who struggles with low serotonin, and then experience a sudden spike in normally healthy levels — like during the fullest phase of the moon— it will likely impact your mental state.

Our neurotransmitters are also impacted by parasites, whose life cycles are impacted by the cycle of the moon. I use this knowledge any time I place my clients or myself on a parasite cleanse, to ensure it is effective.

In a study published in Molecular Psychiatry, Thomas Wehr, a psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health and a coauthor on the current study, found that manic-depressive cycles oscillated with the moon’s gravitational cycles (https://doi.org/10.1038/mp.2016.263).

Some women’s menstrual cycles are also influenced by the moon. This is due to the role the moon plays on hormones. This is due to the role the moon plays on hormones. There are ways to support imbalances once we build awareness.

The question is, what do we do with this information?

The question is, what do we do with this information?

Here is how I personally integrate it. I do not “worship” the moon. I view it as a testament to God’s design. Scripture tells us:

Psalm 19 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

I also started tuning into the moon cycle and paying attention to it’s connection with my mental and physical health. Rather than allowing the world to tell me what narrative to believe (like attempting to tell me if I do not “feel good” all the time, it is a sign of mental illness). I lean into the truth of the changing seasons and look learn, grow spiritually, and be pruned and refined.

When we live constantly disconnected from the world around us, the sunset and sunrise, the moon cycle, seasons, we fail to see spiritual lessons in every day leaving, and we are easier to control. It is easier to control the narrative you believe about your body when you do not know what truly influences.

Rather than take my word for it, or google it, why not explore it on your own? In the next few months, tune into the moon cycle and your mind, body, and Spirit. I am not encouraging you to turn to “astrology apps” it is so important to discerning. That is also another way to remain disconnected. Tune in to you and pray for wisdom and see what you learn.

Track your anxiety and depression, gut health, etc. The art of tuning in, helps us reclaim autonomy. But mostly, it points us back to our Creator...

And we get to stand in awe and proclaim:

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:3-5

Are you living as a woman who has been made in the image of God, given dominion over the work of his hands in creation (Psalm 8:3-8), given salvation through the blood of Jesus (Romans 5:9), proclaiming how excellent His creation is?

Or are you living in fear and survival, disconnected, disembodied, and disempowered, allowing the world to write the narrative you walk in each day and believe about your body? The beauty of free will is that you get to choose. Want to learn more about your God designed body through a biblical lens? Join us inside our monthly wellness collective!
